Xi'an Shopping

If you're waiting to buy local souvenirs and antiques, Xi'an is a good place to pick them up, with cheaper goods than major cities like Beijing. Running down the side of the Great Mosque, Huajue Xiang is a narrow lane filled with stalls selling antiques, arts and crafts, souvenirs and bric-a-brac. As elsewhere, quality varies widely so be careful, and remember to bargain. Beiyuanmen also has a number of tourist stalls and shops, as does the renovated Shuyuanmen, a cobbled, pedestrianised street just east of the South Gate.
For a less contrived shopping experience, visit the market outside Baxian Temple (Xi'an's only Taoist temple, just outside the East Gate) every Wednesday and Sunday. Villagers from the surrounding district bring in antique goods to be sold, ranging from unusual Cultural Revolution stuff to imperial-era ceramics and metal wares. Xi'an is also a good place to pick up art. Original paintings in the classic Chinese style are widely available, but also keep a look out for the bold colors of Shaanxi art - idealized depictions of traditional peasant life that enjoyed nationwide popularity in China during the 1970s. Some good examples can be bought in a small shop behind the Small Goose Pagoda. The Friendship Store (just east of Bell Tower on Nanxin Jie) sells everything, but the price is often high.

| What to buy: |
Xi'an is a terrific place to do some great Chinese souvenir shopping, especially for cultural items and antiques, which are generally cheaper and more varied there than in other cities.
| Folk Paintings |
One very special type of souvenir from Xi'an is local folk painting. The local folk painters have borrowed the line drawing techniques of traditional Chinese brush painting and draw inspiration from cultural and historical figures, animals, flowers, and birds. The most famous are the farmers' paintings from Huxian County (20 kilometers from Xi'an) where farmers have made a career of producing them.

| Reproductions of Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses |
As the museum of the terra-cotta warriors and horses has produced imitations since 1982, it is not difficult to take them home with you as souvenirs. Many different types of replicas are available, from a few inches tall to life-size. Prices from one US dollar to several thousand dollars for the largest statues.

| Lacquerware |
Lacquer is a natural substance obtained from the sap of indigenous lacquer trees. Up to several hundred layers of lacquer are applied to the surface in order to attain a final thickness of between five and eighteen mm. After the lacquer has dried, objects are decorated by carving various designs into the surface. While imperial lacquerware was traditionally in the form of chairs, screens, tables and vases, today one can find objects ranging from trays, cups, and vases to small decorative boxes.

| Tri-color Glazed Pottery |
Tri-color glazed pottery was originally produced in the Tang Dynasty with three color glazes of yellow, grass green, and blue ceramic glazes. Because Xi’an was the capital of the Tang dynasty, a large number of tri-color ceramic articles have been unearthed in Xi'an. In modern times imitations of Tang tri-color ceramic articles are created by skilled craftsmen, including tri-color tomb figures, tri-color horses, and tri-color camels that are hot collectibles for tourists both Chinese as well as foreign.

Art and Jewelry Stores in Xi'an
Xi'an has a strong artistic pedigree, and the paintings and jewelry available here are much more varied in style than those you see elsewhere. As well as the line and wash paintings of legendary figures, flowers and animals that you see everywhere, look for bright, simple folk paintings, usually of country scenes. A traditional Shaanxi art form, appealing for their decorative, flat design and lush colors, these images were popular in the 1970s in China for their idealistic, upbeat portrayal of peasant life.
