Shanghai Expo 2010 Tours

Hong Kong Pavilion

The World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo) will be held at the waterfront area on both sides of Huangpu River in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, 2010.

Under the main theme “Better City, Better Life”, the Shanghai Expo will provide a platform for participating countries, regions and organisations to share their experiences of urban development, discuss advanced ideas on cities, and explore new approaches to eco-friendly lifestyles and working conditions as well as sustainable development. Hong Kong confirmed its participation in the Shanghai Expo in May 2008 and will take this excellent opportunity to promote the city as a modern, vibrant and interconnected metropolis with high quality city life built on creativity and innovation.

Hong Kong’s participation involves four aspects:

• Building a stand-alone Hong Kong Pavilion
• Taking part in the Urban Best Practices Area (UPBA) Exhibition
• Taking part in Expo Shanghai Online
• Organising a series of events and activities before and during the Expo period

With the approval of the Legislative Council, the HKSAR Government has committed HK$346 million in funding for Hong Kong’s Expo presence. This includes HK$145 million for the design and construction of the Hong Kong Pavilion, and $201 million for operation and activities, including the UBPA Exhibition.

HONG KONG PAVILION

The Hong Kong Pavilion – “The Pavilion of Infinity” - is located at the southwest forecourt of the China Pavilion, in Zone A, on the Pudong side of the Shanghai Expo site.

The theme of the pavilion is “Hong Kong - A City with Unlimited Potential”.

The pavilion has a sleek contemporary look to showcase the infinite imagination and creativity of Hong Kong and its people. It will provide visitors with a stunning impression of Hong Kong as a modern, open, free and transparent society.

Six elements will be highlighted:

• Excellent infrastructure and connectivity with the Mainland and the world
• Well-connected and highly efficient domestic transportation network and services
• Advanced and seamless information technology and telecommunication infrastructure
• Free flow of money, goods and information serving the Mainland and the world
• Cultural diversity, harmony and creativity — to showcase Hong Kong as a metropolis and a creative capital
• Sustainable quality city life — to show how to strike a balance among the various aspects of economic development, heritage conservation, urban renewal, environmental protection and whole-person education so as to raise the quality of life.

UBPA EXHIBITION

Hong Kong will take part in the UBPA Exhibition under the theme “Smart Card, Smart City, Smart Life”.

The highly interactive exhibition will demonstrate the extensive and innovative use of modern smart card and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies to improve the quality and efficiency of urban city life in Hong Kong.

ACTIVITIES DURING SHANGHAI EXPO PERIOD

Hong Kong will organise a series of activities and performing arts programmes both within and outside the Expo site to promote Hong Kong's brand as well as the city’s innovation and creativity in different fields. There will also be two art exhibitions.

A five-day "Hong Kong Week" will be held from October 18 to 22, 2010. This will feature opening and closing ceremonies and complementary activities each day. "Hong Kong Week" will provide a kaleidoscope of activities for visitors, including parade and performances highlighting the diversified cultural scene and movie industries.

ONLINE HONG KONG PAVILION

Hong Kong will have a considerable online presence before and during Expo.

A “virtual pavilion”, as well as a “virtual UBPA exhibition”, will be built for the Expo Shanghai Online project to be launched on May 1, 2010. The online pavilion and exhibition will provide netizens with a realistic, virtual experience of Hong Kong’s participation in the Shanghai Expo.
