The Expo 2010 Shanghai China provides a fabulous opportunity for the whole world to communicate. It is certain that the China Pavilion will be the window to introduce and display the splendid and ancient country – China. The red-colored China Pavilion is in Chinese traditional style architecture. It has a beautiful name: Oriental Crown; it is not only a theme pavilion in World Expo site, but also the building which manifests China's spirit and concept adequately.

Located in the core area inside World Expo site, China Pavilion covers an area of 6.52 hectares. It starts from the Beihuan Road and ends at the Nanhuan Road. It is divided into three parts. Chinese National Pavilion that takes up 20,000 square meters of area will show the theme of "Chinese wisdom in urban development". Regional Joint Pavilion is comprised of 31 provinces, municipalities and regions, it takes up 30,000 square meters, the main function is displaying the achievement of city development and multi-ethnic culture. The third part is Hong Kong-Macau-Taiwan Pavilion, which takes up 3,000 square meters.

According to the organizer's statement, this design was chosen from 344 entries submitted by designers from all over the world and were judged by experts. 

The structure of China Pavilion is reasonable. The general concept is "National Pavilion as urban sculpture and Regional Joint Pavilion as the building pedestal". The National Pavilion, standing 63 meters in height, triple the height of any other pavilions, it is the main structure of “Oriental Crown” rising above in the middle; Regional Joint Pavilion is 14 meters tall, it spreads horizontally, as the steady base of the whole construction, taking the form of a enclosed space for public activities. The whole layout manifests the concept of "Heaven" and "Earth" and the flourishing of everything among the oriental philosophers.

Perfect facilities are equipped for the China Pavilion, Except for exhibition halls, entrance halls, multi-function halls, chambers and Underground Park are also available. There are entrances at four sides, and many escalators, elevators lead to exhibition halls, a public activity platform is also provided on housetop. Cargo corridors are set up around the Regional Joint Pavilion so that participants can fetch their cargos conveniently.

The landscape of China Pavilion is very elegant; the designer adopts Jiangnan garden style which can be seen in Hangzhou and Suzhou as the main concept. Several scenery gardens are arranged around the construction, which will give visitors a relaxing enjoyment from the urban environment outside.

The traditional Chinese arch-cultural elements are the most splendid. The Oriental Crown has a distinctive roof made of Chinese unique dougong or brackets, which has a history dating back more than 2,000 years. The feature of dougong style is wooden brackets fixed layer upon layer between the top of a column and a crossbeam. If you know about how ancient craftsmen used dougong to make a roof, you will find it’s such a magic thing. Ancient craftsmen just cut the wooden pieces to fit together so perfectly, they didn’t use any glue or fasteners! You can see dougong style roofs in the Forbidden City and Summer Palace, it was the symbol of power and status in the past, and it’s also used in some religious buildings. The six-layer, 30 meters high dougong roof is the exhibition area Chinese national pavilion. The 56 brackets in the roof symbolize the 56 ethnic groups in China.

After World Expo closes, the Chinese national pavilion will be used as a culture center to hold Chinese culture and art exhibitions, the Regional Joint Pavilion will serve as a standard exhibition hall.
